Team member in the spotlight: Pilot Guided Auger & Microtunneling supervisor Gerwin
Every 2 months, we turn the spotlight on a member of our team. Today, our Pilot guided auger & Microtunneling supervisor Gerwin shares with us what his job entails, some of his most special drillings, and what he has missed during Covid-19 pandemic!
What type of education did you receive?
I went to a metalworking school, but quit in the third year. I was more interested in working instead of going to school, because my older brother and sister were already working and I also wanted to make money. I was 16 years old at the time and started working for a company that produced conveyor belts. Via various routes, I finally ended up in the drilling business at the age of 26.
What does your job entail exactly?
Managing a drilling team and operating the machine, contact with clients and subcontractors during each project within The Netherlands and abroad. The main thing is to complete the drilling safely.
What do you like about your work?
I get to work at different locations, with different people and in the open air. Every drilling project is a new challenge, sometimes big and at other times small.
What does a working day look like for you?
In the morning we start with coffee and - if we sleep in a hotel - breakfast. We start with a work instruction and discuss who is going to do what, we put on some music to get in the mood, and then we get to work. One day you do preparatory work, the next day you concentrate on the drilling process, and the day after you are engaged in changes or are cleaning up.
How do you keep up to date with developments in your field?
Through social media, sometimes a trade fair and through contact with colleagues and business partners.
When did you start working for Kouwenberg Infra?
I’ve been here 11 years now. I started on the first of April and that’s no joke!
Do you get along well with your colleagues?
Oh yes, I have no problems with my colleagues (as long as they listen to me ;-) ).
What makes Kouwenberg Infra unique?
Kouwenberg Infra is a small organisation, yet it is big in the drilling world. It started as a family business, and you can still see and feel that. Fun outings and Friday afternoon get-togethers are regularly organised, but because of Covid-19 we have had to miss these lately, sadly.
Is there something else you’d like to share with us? What makes Kouwenberg Infra unique?
The longest bore I have completed measured 920 metres. In the past, I also drilled two bores from the sea to the shore. Those were big challenges, for the team and for me personally. But we completed them successfully! I have shoe size 45 ;-)
